Angi vs Thumbtack: which is better for Tampa Bay contractors?

Angi or Thumbtack for your Tampa Bay contractor business? Real pricing models, shared leads, credit rules, a worked cost example, and where Google LSA fits.
Angi vs Thumbtack: which is better for Tampa Bay contractors?

In Tampa Bay, Thumbtack is usually the better test for small, quick jobs because you set an exact price per lead and a weekly cap. Angi is usually the better fit for trades that want steady volume on bigger projects and can live with a contract. Both sell shared leads. Judge them on cost per booked job, not cost per lead.

Key takeaways

  • Angi says it pairs each homeowner request with no more than five pros, and charges for leads whether or not you open them.
  • Angi's lead credits are store credit only, must be requested within 45 days, and expire six months after they are issued.
  • Pasco County grew about 20% from 2020 to 2025. New homeowners there are searching for pros right now, and many search Google and AI tools first.

Take a screen enclosure and handyman crew based in Wesley Chapel. After Hurricane Milton, the owner loaded $1,500 onto lead apps to catch the cleanup rush. Phones lit up for three weeks. Then the requests turned into $90 screen patches across Land O' Lakes and Lutz, each one shared with four other crews. His Google Business Profile still showed his old truck and nine reviews. The homeowners who asked an AI tool for "screen repair near Wesley Chapel" never heard his name. The free 60-second AI visibility check shows whether Google and AI search recommend you, or send that homeowner to a marketplace instead.

Is Angi or Thumbtack better for Tampa Bay contractors?

Thumbtack is usually the better first test for crews doing many small jobs, like handyman, screen repair, pressure washing and minor electrical, because you control an exact price per lead. Angi usually suits HVAC, roofing and remodeling shops that want volume on larger tickets. Whichever books jobs for less in your trade wins.

Don't pick on reputation or a sales rep's pitch. Pick on numbers from your own test.

What does Thumbtack charge contractors per lead in 2026?

There's no public rate card. You choose a maximum lead price for each service, and Thumbtack says the price you set is exactly what you'll pay unless a discount applies. A weekly budget caps your total. Third-party guides report lead costs from about $10 to over $100, varying by job type, size and market.

A Thumbtack moderator explained the setup in an April 2026 post for new pros. Two levers control spend: your max lead prices and your weekly budget. A higher lead price tells Thumbtack which services you care about most.

Leads come in two ways:

  • Direct leads. A customer contacts you from search results, or Thumbtack matches you automatically. You pay when it arrives.
  • Opportunities. Requests you browse and choose to answer. Housecall Pro's May 2026 guide says you pay only if the customer responds.

Thumbtack's guidance uses a simple test: a $25 lead that becomes a $1,000 job is strong value. Flip it around for Tampa Bay. A $45 lead for a $120 dryer vent cleaning in Brandon eats more than a third of the ticket before you burn any gas on I-75.

So set your highest prices on the services you most want, like full rescreens or panel upgrades. Set low prices or switch off the jobs that barely pay.

What does Angi (formerly Angie's List) cost a contractor?

Angi makes money from pros through lead fees, ad contracts and membership or subscription packages. Lead fees depend on the service, the homeowner's location and demand. Angi doesn't post prices publicly. One 2026 third-party guide reports roughly $15 to $85 per lead and about $300 a year for membership, so get written terms.

Angi's own filings confirm the model. Its 2025 Form 10-K says pros pay for consumer matches whether or not they end up doing the work. It also lists advertising under contract and membership packages. The 10-K says lead revenue varies by service, product experience and location.

On the ground, here's how it works:

  • Opportunities show you the project and fee up front. You choose whether to accept.
  • Leads form when you and the homeowner both show interest. You're charged even if you never open them.
  • Your monthly budget only covers automatic leads. Opportunities you accept by hand bill on top.
  • Subscriptions deliver automatic leads monthly as part of a contract, with extra opportunities at extra cost.

The reported ranges come from Housecall Pro's August 2026 Angi guide, which also warns that real costs vary by trade, market and account terms.

The platform is shrinking on the pro side. Angi reported 106,000 average monthly active pros in Q2 2026, down 17% from a year earlier, and revenue down 11%. Ask your rep what that means for lead volume in Hillsborough and Pasco. For context, the FTC finalized a 2023 order over how HomeAdvisor, an Angi company, marketed leads (FTC).

Can I get credit back for bad leads on Angi or Thumbtack?

Only in narrow cases. Angi issues store credit, not cash, for disconnected or wrong phone numbers, out-of-area requests, wrong job types, duplicates and deactivated leads. You must ask within 45 days and have tried contact within 24 hours. Thumbtack has said non-responsive customers don't qualify. Neither platform credits a homeowner who hired someone else.

Angi lists what it will not credit: a homeowner who won't call back, already found someone, changed their mind or was just shopping. It says its pricing already accounts for those.

On Thumbtack, a moderator wrote in a 2025 community thread that its refund policy says nothing about non-responsive customers, so they aren't eligible. Suspected spam goes to a separate review team.

After a storm, this gets expensive fast. Hurricane Milton made landfall at Siesta Key as a Category 3 on October 10, 2024, and the National Hurricane Center counted 45 tornadoes on land in Florida. Storms flood every platform with requests from homeowners who contact many crews at once. Many of those leads go cold within a day.

Google Local Services Ads handles this differently. Google says you pay for valid leads and that its models may credit low-quality leads automatically over time.

How do I figure my real cost per booked job?

Take total lead spend for a channel and divide it by jobs actually booked from that channel. Then compare that to your average ticket. If lead cost eats more than about a quarter of the ticket on routine work, the channel is likely losing money once you add labor, fuel and callbacks. Booking rate moves this number most.

Worked example. Say you run a two-crew roofing and gutter company in Riverview. You test for 60 days. These are assumptions; swap in your numbers.

  • Thumbtack: 30 leads at a $35 average max lead price = $1,050. You book 1 in 6, so 5 jobs, mostly gutter and minor repair work averaging $450.
  • Angi: 24 leads at a $70 average fee = $1,680. You book 1 in 8, so 3 jobs. Two are $450 repairs and one is a $14,000 reroof.
  • Google LSA: 20 charged leads at $60 average = $1,200. You book 1 in 4, so 5 jobs averaging $900.
Channel (assumed)SpendBooked jobsCost per booked jobRevenueLead spend as % of revenue
Thumbtack$1,0505$210$2,25047%
Angi$1,6803$560$14,90011%
Google LSA$1,2005$240$4,50027%

Look at what happens. Angi has the worst cost per booked job, yet it wins on revenue because one reroof landed. Thumbtack has the cheapest jobs and the worst return. Pull the reroof out of the Angi row and it becomes the biggest loser.

That's why one lucky month proves nothing. Run at least 60 days, log every job's revenue, and judge each channel on lead spend as a share of revenue.

Which Tampa Bay trades should use Angi, Thumbtack or neither?

Handyman, screen and lanai repair, pressure washing, and small electrical jobs tend to fit Thumbtack. Roofing, HVAC replacement and remodeling can work on Angi if you can carry the cost of losing many shared leads. Emergency AC and plumbing calls usually belong on Google LSA and your Google Business Profile, where the homeowner calls you directly.

Tampa Bay has its own patterns:

  • AC failures are urgent. When an AC dies in August in Brandon or Riverview, the homeowner calls someone within minutes. A marketplace request form is too slow. See our take on HVAC marketing in Tampa Bay.
  • Storm work attracts out-of-towners. After a hurricane, crews from other states flood the area. Local roofers win on proof: reviews, a real address and a license number on the website. Marketplace profiles don't carry that proof as well. More on roofing marketing in Tampa Bay.
  • Salt air and humidity create steady small jobs. Corroded fixtures, screen damage and mildew washing on Clearwater and St. Petersburg homes are classic small tickets. That's Thumbtack's sweet spot if your price per lead is low.
  • Growth corridors. Hillsborough County has about 1.57 million people, and Pasco has 75.7% owner-occupied homes. New-build owners in Wesley Chapel and Land O' Lakes need finish work, fans, ceiling repairs and landscaping.

Should Angi and Thumbtack come before Google LSA, my Google profile and my website?

No. Build your owned demand first: a complete Google Business Profile, fresh reviews and a fast website with real service pages. Add Google LSA for direct calls. Use Angi or Thumbtack last, with a hard cap, to fill gaps or test a service. Owned channels keep working after you stop paying. Marketplace leads stop the same day.

Reviews are the hinge. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 68% of consumers require at least a 4-star rating, and 74% only consider reviews from the last three months. It also found 45% now use AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6%.

AI tools answer from what they can read: your site, your Google profile and your reviews. AI crawlers such as GPTBot and PerplexityBot don't run JavaScript, so your service pages need to load as plain HTML. A thin, script-heavy site is invisible to them.

If your website is the weak link, it doesn't have to cost a fortune. Our website pricing starts at $995 for a landing page, $2,495 for a five-page site and $4,495 for a ten-page site with a blog. Pair that with Google Business Profile work. Local SEO usually shows measurable results in three to six months, with the biggest gains in months six through twelve. Want to talk it through? Here's what to do this month:

  1. Update your Google Business Profile: hours, service areas from Clearwater to Wesley Chapel, real job photos and every service you offer.
  2. Text a review link to every customer from the last 90 days. Aim to pass 20 reviews.
  3. Pick two high-margin services and turn off everything else on Thumbtack or Angi.
  4. Set a weekly cap on Thumbtack or a monthly cap on Angi, and get Angi's contract and cancellation terms in writing.
  5. Turn on an instant text reply so every lead hears back in under five minutes.
  6. Track every lead in one sheet: platform, cost, reply time, booked or not, revenue.
  7. Request Angi credits for bad numbers and out-of-area leads within the 45-day window.

Frequently asked questions

Which one is better, Angi or Thumbtack?

It depends on your trade and ticket size. Thumbtack lets you set an exact price per lead and a weekly cap, which suits small, fast jobs. Angi offers subscriptions and ads that suit larger projects and steady volume. Run both with a hard cap for 60 days, then keep the one with the lower lead spend as a share of revenue.

How much of a fee does Thumbtack charge?

Thumbtack charges a fee per lead, not a percentage of the job. You choose a maximum lead price for each service plus a weekly budget, and Thumbtack says you pay exactly the price you set unless a promotion applies. There is no public rate card. Third-party guides report roughly $10 to over $100 per lead depending on trade and market.

How much does Angie's List charge?

Angie's List now operates as Angi. It charges contractors through lead fees, ad contracts and membership or subscription packages. Lead fees vary by service, homeowner location and demand. Angi doesn't publish prices. A 2026 third-party guide reports about $15 to $85 per lead and roughly $300 a year for membership. Ask for written terms before you sign.

How many contractors get the same Angi or Thumbtack lead?

Angi says each homeowner request is matched with no more than five pros. Thumbtack leads are also shared, and customers typically hear from several pros. Either way, you're competing the moment the lead arrives. The crew that replies first with a clear price range and an open time slot usually books the job, so speed matters more than the bid.

Does Angi or Thumbtack refund bad leads?

Angi gives store credit, not cash, for bad phone numbers, out-of-area requests, wrong job types and duplicates, if you request within 45 days and tried contact within 24 hours. Credits expire after six months. Thumbtack has said non-responsive customers are not eligible. Neither platform credits leads where the homeowner simply hired someone else.

Is Google Local Services Ads better than Angi or Thumbtack in Tampa?

For urgent trades like AC repair, plumbing and electrical, LSA is often the better first paid channel. Homeowners call you directly, you pay for valid leads, and Google may credit low-quality leads automatically. It works best with a strong Google Business Profile and fresh reviews behind it. Many Tampa Bay shops run LSA and skip marketplaces entirely.

The bottom line

Angi and Thumbtack both rent you shared leads. Thumbtack gives you sharper price control for small jobs. Angi gives you more ways to buy volume for bigger ones. Neither builds anything you keep. Test with a cap, measure lead spend against revenue, and put the savings into your Google profile, your reviews and a website that Google and AI tools can read.
