Usually it is scripts, not design. A typical contractor site quietly loads Google Analytics, Google Ads, the Meta pixel, a call-tracking script, a chat widget, a review carousel, a scheduling embed, and two or three abandoned tags left behind by a former agency.
Audit what is actually firing, remove anything from a vendor you no longer use, load non-critical scripts after the page renders, and consolidate what remains through one tag manager. Chat widgets and third-party review sliders are the most common offenders; a single widget can add more weight than every image on the page combined.
