What is llms.txt and does my contractor website need one?

An llms.txt file is a plain-text file at the root of your site that gives AI tools a clean, plain-language map of your most important pages. Think of it as a menu for language models: your services, service areas, hours, booking link, and key pages in one readable list, without the navigation and scripts that clutter a normal page.

It is not yet an official standard and no major AI engine has committed to honoring it, so treat it as cheap insurance rather than a growth lever. It takes an hour to write, costs nothing to host, and cannot hurt. Structured data and consistent listings still do far more of the work.
